Britain’s last Tommy, Harry Patch who is now 111 will be guest of honour at The Recreation Field Timsbury on Saturday June 27 for a special event to celebrate Britain’s Armed Forces, past , present and future. As part of national celebrations it recognises the support given by service men and women and will be split into two parts.
The first section beginning at 12pm will see spectators being encouraged to take part in an authentic Second World War Home Guard Training School. A Second World War battle simulation is another highlight of the day. Other features include an appearance by the Bath Spa Band, stalls and marquees run by Regimental Associations, ex-service and local charities, military and vintage vehicles, a falconry display and a barbecue.
The Sunset Ceremony in which over 800 ex-land army girls in Somerset have been invited to take part in will close the event at 5pm. HM’s Lord Lieutenant of Somerset and Lady Elizabeth Gass will take the salute.
The second part of the event is a Second World War themed dance and pig roast which will be held at the Conygre Hall from 7.30pm to 12 midnight. Music is provided by the New Parkway Show Band and the evening will be compered by Timsbury’s own celebrity Fred Wedlock. There will be prizes for the best themed costumes. Tickets are £5 (not to include the pig roast) and are available at the Timsbury branch of the Royal British Legion (tel 01761 470232).
County Manager, Major David Lowe said, “ I am thrilled to make Timsbury a part of the national celebrations and to be able to offer a fun-filled family event through which the community can help honour the efforts of such people “.
