Armed Forces Day

Timsbury was invaded on Saturday 27th June by many hundreds, nay even thousands, all coming to help celebrate Armed Forces Day. This had been organised by Somerset area of the Royal British Legion with particular help from the Timsbury Branch.

Luckily the weather held fine and the visitors were kept entertained in one arena by The Band of Wellington School CCF, a drill display by Shepton Mallett Army cadet force silent drill squad, a Classic vehicle Parade, Land Army Girls, Stardust Majorettes and a Falconry display.  In the other arena there was a Battle Simulation and Skirmish demonstration.

There were numerous stalls manned by local and from afar organisations raising funds for their respective causes and making a donation from that to the RBL fund. These organisations included the WRENS, Guides, Local Churches and the like and all seemed to have had a good day.

Sustenance was available if the form of a Hog Roast, Burgers and Dogs along with W.I. lunches and teas. The latter could be enjoyed whilst listening to the Bath Spa Band who were performing in the Conygre hall.

The one disapointment was the non arrival of the WW1 veteran Harry Patch who due to put in an appearance but on the day was not considered fit enough to travel, not surprising as he has just celebrated his 111 birthday!

The day was rounded off with a 40s style dance in the Conygre Hall organised by the Timsbury RBL Branch. The music was supplied by The New Parkway Showband with interval entertainment supplied by local celeb Fred Wedlock. Once again a Hog Roast was available for those still hungry!
