The widow of a Bath dentist who moved to Timsbury in 2004 has died at Cholwell House Nursing Home at Temple Cloud at the age of 94. Blanche Greenwood’s husband Philip had a dental practice in the Abbey Churchyard and worked there until 1972 when he went into semi-retirement and their son Jonathan took over.
Mrs Greenwood was born in Bradford on February 12 1914 and attended Harrogate Girls’ School. On leaving school she became a beautician before marrying Philip in September 1939 at which point the couple moved to Bath when Mr Greenwood bought the dental practice. During the war Mrs Greenwood worked as a secretary at the MOD before their only son Jonathan was born in 1944. She never again had a full-time job but worked on a volunteers’ library round taking books around to people.
Mr and Mrs Greenwood lived for most of their married life at Richmond Road Lansdown where they took a great pride in their garden. After Mr Greenwood’s retirement the couple travelled extensively and would spend most of the winter months abroad in their motor van with South Africa a favourite destination. The couple enjoyed an active social life and pottery and flower arranging were two of Mrs Greenwood’s particular interests.
The death of Mr Greenwood in 1993 had a big impact on his wife but she remained in Bath until 2004 when she came to live with her son and daughter-in-law Joan in Timsbury. Suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease she found it increasingly difficult to cope and in July 2008 she moved to Cholwell House where her health rapidly deteriorated.
Mrs Greenwood who was cremated in a private ceremony is survived by her son, grandson Ben and great-grandchildren Zara and Keane.
Mr Greenwood said, “ Mother adored Ben and her great-grandchildren and I found her a caring and loving parent. It was painful to see her condition during the last two months of her life”.
