There was an intensity and focus in Timsbury’s display on Saturday that has not always been evident this season. After losing their first two wickets to Mark Smith for just two runs Brislington were rescued by their key batsmen Geoff Iles and former Somerset county batsman Richard Ollis who added 111 for the third wicket. The introduction of left-arm seamer Jeff Dent then proved decisive as he had Iles caught in the deep by Jerry Thompson for 58 and caught and bowled Ollis for 52. Backed up by a committed and impressive fielding display which included two fine catches by skipper Mark Sage, Dent finished with the commendable figures of 5-27 as the home side ended on 171-7 from their 50 overs. Smith again bowled tidily to take 2-29 from 14 tight overs.
In reply Smith was an early victim for Leigh Iles but Dave Pippett then embarked on a crucial partnership with Sage and the two of them added 85 fluent runs before Pippett was adjudged lbw for a well constructed 41. Sage, however, was not to be denied and mixing sensible defence with some typically belligerent strikes that brought him 7 fours and 3 sixes he saw Timsbury home with time to spare. Sage finished 76 not out and was well supported by Dent and Jez Hare who was 22 not out at the close.
Timsbury 2 XI edged a thriller at home to Brislington’s second string by one wicket to give the club its first ever double in the Globe Sports West of England Premier League (Bristol and Somerset ) In a low scoring encounter Timsbury made hard work of reaching their target of 115 but the last pair of Ian Ettle and 16 year old Nathan Hawkins kept their nerve to see the home side over the finishing line off the third ball of the last over.
Ettle and Hawkins had already done their bit with the ball as Timsbury kept a tight hold on the Brislington innings. Ettle finished with 3-30 from his 11 overs while Hawkins was a model of accuracy with 2-13 from 8 overs. They were well backed up by Oli Weaver who took 2-28 from 10 overs and skipper Steve Teall (2-35). The Brislington innings had been boosted by a last wicket stand of 29 with number 11 Fred Jennings 19 not out.
Timsbury made a disastrous start in reply slipping to 9-3 but the experienced Darren Wilkins with 29 and Adam Workman added a vital 44 before their quick dismissals and the speedy exit of captain Teall and Paul Cracknell had the home side reeling on 64-7. Weaver proved just the man for a crisis and a fluent knock of 34 in conjunction with a resolute Matt Brinkworth saw the home side in sight of victory . They saw the total past 100 before both were out and it was left to Ettle and Hawkins to seal victory. For the visitors Greg Walters took 3-18 and Huw Grove 3-30.
