Cyril Clements

One of Timsbury’s most genial and popular characters has died at the RUH Bath at the age of 83. Since moving to the village with his wife Margaret in 1972 Cyril Clements had become fully immersed in the life of the community and he will be much missed by many organisations.

Mr Clements was born in Bedminster, Bristol and was educated at Victoria Park Primary and Marksbury Road Senior School. He then learnt the rope trade at William Terrell’s and in 1959 set up his own company Bristol Rope and Twine with William Baker who he bought out in !971. At the time of his death he was still a partner in the firm with his daughter Gillian and son Gordon.

Mr Clements married his first wife Margaret Robbins in 1946 and they had three children, Gillian, Pamela and Heather. After her death in 1969 he married his second wife Margaret who had two children Julia and Gordon who Mr Clements adopted. He is survived by his wife, the five children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr Clements was a life-long Bristol Rovers’ supporter and his company have backed the club for many years. He had been a member of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes since 1953 and was Provincial Grand Primo of the Bath Province in 1975. A regular worshipper at South Road Methodist Church Timsbury he had acted as treasurer since 1973, a position he had also held at Marksbury Methodist Church before it closed. He was a founder member of the Federation of Small Businesses in Bristol and a trustee of the Timsbury based national charity Bibles For Children. In his busy life he was also chairman of the Timsbury Horticultural Society, a vice-president of Timsbury Cricket Club and a member of the Keynsham branch of the Royal British Legion and the Merchant Navy Club. In his younger days he was a regular visitor to the sports clubs in Keynsham reporting on their matches for the local newspapers.

The funeral service will be held at South Road Methodist Church Timsbury on Wednesday February 3 at 1pm and will be followed by a private cremation.

Mrs Clements said, “Cyril was a loving, caring and gentle man who always had time for everyone. We know that he will be missed by many people but especially by his family who he adored.”
