Timsbury Cricket Club accepted the challenge from their own league football side to a pre-Christmas meeting and ran out 3-1 winners. In front of a sizeable crowd the intense local derby was well patrolled by ex-Football League official Roger Lane who came in as a late replacement for Premier League referee Steve Tanner who surprisingly preferred an appointment at the Emirates to a date at the Recreation Field.
The Cricket Club made the better start and took a deserved lead after 19 minutes. Ben Hancock handled in the area and keeper Neil Hucker came up to clinically convert the spot-kick. They went two up after 26 minutes when Callum Stewart caught the Cricketers out with a quickly taken free-kick that Jez Hare converted. Just before half-time the Cricketers came back into the match with the best goal of the game. Teenager Jack Williams shot from well out and his dipping effort sailed over Hucker’s head and into the net.
The Cricketers had the better of the second half but failed to make their pressure count. Russ Davies did hit a post and also blocked a shot from his own player Mike Reynolds which looked goalbound but prompted by Stewart the Cricket Club always looked dangerous and Dave Nowell volleyed over the top with the goal at his mercy. In the very last minute a clever back-heel from Dan Vowles set Steve Clothier clear and with the Cricketers defence nowhere to be seen he crossed for Lloyd Davies to finish the job off.
