Glastonbury 2 Timsbury 0

After gaining their first league win for over five months the previous Saturday in the Errea Somerset County League Premier Division Timsbury Athletic failed to maintain the momentum against fellow strugglers Glastonbury Town going down by two goals to nil. Much to manager Sam Gurner’s frustration unavailabilities forced him to make several changes from the line-up against Backwell United and in the end Timsbury were a well beaten side.

On a pitch that was not conducive to good football the first half was a scrappy affair with few clearcut chances at either end. With the slope in their favour after the interval the home side upped their game and their physically stronger team dominated the half. A goal 5 minutes into the half put Glastonbury in front and a penalty 20 minutes from time following a Matt Brooks’ foul secured all three points. Brooks and substitute Russell Davies did come close with two late headers but Gurner had no complaints with the result.

He said, “After half time Glastonbury outmuscled us but they were not a great side and I was disappointed with a number of aspects of the day. After the great result against Backwell I was looking to keep the run going but with several players unavailable and others not preparing for the game in the manner that I would have wanted it made the task very difficult. If we are to put together a run that might give us a chance to stay up we will need total commitment from the players”.

On Saturday Timsbury are home to Castle Cary with a 2.30pm kick-off.

Timsbury Reserves who are also bottom of their league put up a dogged performance against second in the table Purnell Sports before going down 2-0 at home in the Somerset County League Division 2 East.
