Picture 305 « Timsbury Male Voice Choir

In 1921, when the choir was formed, Mr. Oliver Janes was appointed the Conductor, and was so until 1951 when his son Kenneth took over. The choir members even in the early 1920′s, had good voices. It had been a mining community and one had the feeling that the village tended to follow the Welsh tradition of singing.

Timsbury Male Voice Quartet, shown above, included (left to right) Bill Fear (tenor), Bert Fricker (second tenor), Alec Tucker (baritone) and George Fear (bass). This quartet, formed from within the choir in the 1930′s, and known as The Singing Miners, appeared regularly on the radio during the war. In those early days before tape recorders, they could not listen to themselves, and had to rely heavily on the help and advice of their conductor.

It is very interesting that in all the years of the Male Voice Choir, it has had only three Conductors, of these, Mr. Janes and his son covered over 60 years. Click here for a more detailed account of the Timsbury Male Voice Choir.
