Timsbury Women’s Institute was created in May 1945 as the war was drawing to a close. Perhaps this was the reason for its birth. Although this now seems a very long time ago, there are older institutes in the area. The earliest held its first meeting in what is now the Avon Federation in 1917.
The difference in life now and then is hard to imagine, but the meetings are probably held on the same lines with a hard working committee led by a President, Secretary and Treasurer. The meetings were originally held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall on the site of the Youth Club. Meetings are now held in the Conygre Hall.
Some famous people have visited the Institute including Lady Anne Waldegrave, Lady Isobel Barnett and Lesley Crowther. For the 40th Birthday, a crab apple tree was planted outside the doctor’s surgery. The talks at each meeting have been extremely varied and anyone who has attended W.I. for any length of time should have received a wonderful education.

Over the years, membership has fluctuated with probably it’s largest numbers in the mid 1970′s. This photograph (above) was taken when W. I. members were on a visit to a Flour Mill, 22nd June 1955.
