Timsbury Athletic ended 2008 in the same way as they had begun it with a comfortable victory , this time at the expense of Somerset County League Premier Division basement club Odd Down Reserves. On an icy surface that survived a morning inspection the visitors seemed to have the game wrapped up by the interval when they led 3-0 but Odd Down fought back strongly in the second period and with better finishing could have embarrassed the village side.
Odd Down were forced to play manager Duncan Fear in goal and his miskick after 12 minutes gave Joe Sparey an early chance which he put wide. Soon after he made amends, however, heading home a Lloyd Davies cross. At the other end a shot from Rod Smith was deflected just over the Timsbury bar with Neil Hucker stranded but the visitors were looking much the more dangerous side and went further ahead after 25 minutes when a shot from Davies from just outside the penalty area crept inside a post. Davies grabbed his second goal right on half-time producing an excellent header from Ben Hancock’s inch perfect free-kick.
Odd Down who have won just one league game all season put up a spirited second half showing as Timsbury took their foot off the gas. Simon Biddell gave an early indication of intent when he hit the bar and both Glenn Witts and Lee O’Brien headed wide with the goal beckoning. With time running out the visitors added a fourth goal when substitute Russ Davies scored after Steve Baker’s effort had been parried before Witts headed a late consolation goal for the plucky Bath side.
Timsbury now face another crucial home game against Castle Cary on New Year’s Day with a 2’o’clock kick-off and then face Bridgwater Town Reserves at the Recreation Field on Saturday in the Somerset Senior Cup.
Timsbury Reserves meanwhile came out second best in their home match with near neighbours Tunley Athletic losing 3-1 in the Somerset County League Division 2 East fixture. Robin Lewis got the Timsbury goal.
