Secretary Retires

Angela Martin who has acted as secretary to the Timsbury Women’s Day of Prayer group has decided to stand down after ten years in the post. She announced her decision at the annual service which was held this year at Tabor Church. The ecumenical service was first held in the village in 1988 and has proved a popular event for the women of all four churches.

The Women’s World Day of Prayer was started in 1887 in New York and is now celebrated in more than 170 countries. It starts on International Dateline at dawn in Queen Salote’s Girls’ School in Tonga, encircles the world and finishes 24 hours later on an island off the coast of Alaska. Each year a different country organises the format of the service and this year it was the Christian women of Cameroon.

Mrs Martin said, “ In these early days of the new century when the world continues to be in such a state of unrest when wars and injustice and poverty still abound more than ever it is important that women hold the line and they deserve solidarity from the rest of us. This service is often overlooked and underrated and that is wrong”.

The service at Tabor was led once again by Bill Drake-Brockman from St Mary’s Church who is a licensed Lay Reader. The guest speaker was Margaret West from Tabor who developed the theme “Let everything that has breath praise God” and the pianist was Linda Pope. Readings were shared by ladies from each of the four village churches. Afterwards tea was served in the schoolroom.
