Timsbury Athletic’s hopes of securing their third successive home victory in the Errea Somerset County League Premier Division were firmly rebuffed by league leaders Bishops Lydeard who effectively tied the game up with two first half goals. In a one-sided opening 45 minutes the home side failed to create a single goalscoring opportunity and despite a spirited burst in the last 15 minutes of the game the visitors’ goalkeeper Russell Jones enjoyed one of his more relaxing afternoons.
The game took a long time to come to life before Bishops Lydeard started to create real problems for the home defence. Andy Lawton headed over with the first opportunity before his side took an 18th minute lead when the dangerous Dale Webber converted Dominic Rowe’s smart cross. Within five minutes the Taunton side were two up with Matthew Francis heading home a centre from Neil Gaige. At the other end Timsbury offered little and a long speculative effort from Steve Brimble right on half time which sailed harmlessly over the top was the closest they came.
Early in the second half Trevor Jenkins hammered a shot against the underside of the bar after being set up by Webber as the visitors continued where they had left off and Gaige volleyed over the top. It was an hour before Timsbury forced their meaningful opening with Alex Young’s shot being blocked by the Bishops Lydeard defence after good work from Adam Pugsley. The visitors then missed a great opportunity to go three up when Rowe was tripped in the box. Webber took the penalty but Wayne Gay made a fine save diving to his right to deny the Taunton striker. The let off inspired Timsbury to their best spell of the game with Young striking just wide after good work by Les Allen and defender Vince Pitt also shooting past the post after venturing up field. In a final flourish Steve Baker shot wide for the home side in stoppage time as the visitors maintained their challenge for the title and Timsbury remained firmly rooted to the foot of the table.
Things get no easier for Timsbury on Saturday when they entertain Watchet Town who lie second in the table.
Timsbury Reserves’ poor run continued with a heavy 5-1 defeat away to Clutton in the Somerset County League Division 2 East. Joe Parker scored their consolation goal.
