In their first league match of 2010 Timsbury Athletic discovered that nothing changes with the advent of a new year as they went down 4-0 at home to Mangotsfield United Reserves in the Somerset County League Premier Division. To their credit the home side never gave up and despite being three behind at the interval kept going in the second period but a lack of potency up front and fragility at the back determined that the result was never in doubt.
The game could not have begun worse for the home side. A shot from Andrew Sheppard took a wicked deflection and Wayne Gay was picking the ball out of the home net within two minutes of the kick-off. In Timsbury’s first attack a Les Allen header was comfortably held by Sam Alexander in the Mangotsfield goal but it was the visitors who held sway. Gay saved well from the impressive Matt Brown before Sheppard came within a whisker of adding his second goal only to be denied by the post.
When the next goal did arrive after 25 minutes it was no great surprise that skipper Brown was involved showing great composure before shooting past Gay. Dean Paget hit the side-netting with the home side’s best chance but after 38 minutes the Bristol side were 3-0 ahead when Sheppard’s free-kick somehow eluded the Timsbury wall to find its way into the corner of Gay’s net.
A cool finish from Brown eight minutes into the second half saw Mangotsfield go four up and a rout threatened but Timsbury never allowed their heads to drop. They played some neat approach football without ever seriously testing the visitors’ defence although Paget did have a couple of half-chances. Mangotsfield had opportunities to increase their advantage but Gay did well to get down to a well struck free-kick from Luke Hall-Cousins while substitute Dan Turner was brought down by Jake Riddle as he raced clear for which the Timsbury defender collected a yellow card.
This Saturday things don’t get any easier for Timsbury who continue to search for their first league point since August . They entertain Backwell United who beat them 5-0 earlier in the season.
