Timsbury Athletic pushed championship seeking Shirehampton all the way before eventually going down to the odd goal in five in an entertaining Somerset County League Premier Division tussle. Both sides created plenty of chances but it was a hat-trick from the visitors’ Richard Hewit that was to decide the game.
Russ Davies had an early chance for Timsbury but shot well over the top while Nick Lloyd got the ball in the net for Shirehampton but was ruled off-side. The home side took the lead after 20 minutes with an excellent goal. Alex Young provided the through ball and Mark Hancock produced the kind of polished finish that would have graced any ground. Almost immediately Joe Sparey came within a whisker of adding a second but Matt Turner in the visitors’ goal just got a hand to the shot and pushed it around the post. Young headed Sparey’s clever cross over the top as Timsbury continued to embarrass their opponents but a lack of concentration 7 minutes from the interval cost Timsbury dearly. From a deep free-kick Hewit was left totally unmarked and he made no mistake with his trusty left foot.
Within 7 minutes of the second half starting Shirehampton were ahead. The dangerous Hewit hit a crisp left foot shot past Neil Hucker in the Timsbury goal. Almost from the restart Steve Baker had a great chance to put the home side level but after breaking clear he screwed his shot disappointingly wide. With 17 minutes left parity was restored, however. A handling offence on the goalline saw a Shirehampton defender shown the red card by referee Colin Roberts and Ben Hancock joined his brother on the scoresheet with a confident spot-kick. A draw would have been a fair reflection of the afternoon’s proceedings but Timsbury again paid for defensive indecision when Lee Riches was allowed to cross from the left and Hewit grabbed his hat-trick.
