Timsbury 4 Castle Cary 2

Could there be a small chink of light at the end of very dark tunnel for Timsbury Athletic who notched up their second successive home success with a battling 4-2 win over sixth placed Castle Cary in the Errea Somerset County League Premier Division. Just like the proverbial buses Timsbury waited over five months for their first league points on their own patch only to secure two in a row and in so doing more then double their tally and at last reach double figures.

Timsbury began strongly and could have been ahead in the very first minute when Alex Young spurned a great chance shooting into the side-netting after being set up by Les Allen. A searching free-kick from Jake Riddle was then scrambled away by the visitors but it was far from one way traffic. At the other end a free-kick from Matt Robinson floated wide while Rhys Hayhoe was foiled at the last minute after a penetrating run and then soon after shot wide with another good chance.

The deadlock was broken after 38 minutes and involved two players who were to have very different afternoons. Adam Pugsley who had one of his best afternoons for the home side shot from distance and Castle Cary keeper Jamie Stewart could only help his powerful shot into the net. Wayne Gay ended the first half with a timely save from the dangerous Hayhoe and Timsbury went to the interval one up.

Almost immediately after the resumption Pugsley’s free-kick was fumbled by Stewart and Russell Davies was on hand to poke the ball over the line. A rampant Pugsley then hit another free-kick just over the top before the visitors forced their way back into the match. A quickly taken free-kick by Tony Pike caught out the home side and Hayhoe smashed his shot past Gay. The Timsbury custodian protested to referee Colin Mills that the free-kick had been taken too early but all he gained for his efforts was a yellow card.

Castle Cary were right back in it now and equalised 16 minutes from time. A dipping shot from Marcus Pike well out on the right sailed over Gay’s head and into the net. The game was now very much in the balance but the visitors were not helped by the sending off of Tommy Warren and Timsbury took advantage courtesy of two goalkeeping errors by Stewart. The first presented Pugsley with a chance on the right and he curled a superbly judged shot into the top corner of the net. Then Stewart again lost the ball inside his own area and Allen handed Steve Baker the opportunity to force the ball over the line at the second attempt for his fourth goal in as many matches.

Timsbury’s elation at the result was slightly deflated with the news that fellow strugglers St George and Glastonbury had also won but if the side continue to fight as hard as they did on Saturday the season is far from over. This Saturday they entertain league leaders Bishops Lydeard with a 2.30pm kick-off.

The match was sponsored by Darren Wilkins Electrical Contractors Ltd.
