Timsbury 5 Backwell 1

After 15 consecutive league defeats Timsbury Athletic stunned Backwell United with a 5-1 home win in the Errea Somerset County League Premier Division. In an amazing reversal of fortunes the home side rattled in five first half goals against a side who not long ago had promotion aspirations.

Timsbury had the ball in the net in the first minute only to have it ruled out for offside but after keeper Wayne Gay had done well to foil Darren Brown at the other end the home side went ahead after 9 minutes. Steve Baker who never stopped running throughout the whole game caught Gary Clarke off his line and his looping shot deceived the keeper. Gay again rescued Timsbury with a fine save from Ben Garland before manager Sam Gurner making a rare appearance for the side added number two after 25 minutes. On his 500th appearance for Timsbury he showed he had lost none of his predatory talents with a crisp clinical finish.

Gurner then turned creator with a fine cross which Baker headed home before having to make do with a 30 minute cameo role as injury saw him replaced by Russell Davies. Still the goals came apace, however, with Les Allen confidently converting a penalty after Alex Young had been scythed down and Davies adding a fifth after being set up by Adam Pugsley. Brown who always carried Backwell’s main threat almost pulled one goal back for the visitors just before half-time but was too high and Timsbury went in at the interval 5-0 up and in fantasy land.

Inevitably the second half failed to match the earlier 45 minutes for goals but both teams had their chances. Brown did pull one goal back for the visitors after 70 minutes but it was no more than a token gesture and Timsbury could easily have added to their lead with wasteful finishing that on this occasion was not to prove expensive.

Timsbury Reserves were unable to match the heroics of their senior side and went down 5-0 away to Cutters Friday Reserves in the Somerset County League Division 2 East.
