Timsbury Cricket

The thin dividing line between victory and defeat was never better illustrated than at Chipping Sodbury on Saturday when Timsbury narrowly failed to notch their first win of the season in the West of England Premier League (Bristol and North Somerset ).

Chasing a winning target of 157 Timsbury had reached 150-9 when Jerry Thompson who had led a strong recovery was caught on the boundary just inches from a crucial six. It was cruel justice for Thompson whose 56 alongside Mark Smith’s knock of 30 and Greg Passingham’s innings of 20 had helped the visitors recover from the depths of 32-4. Jon Toghill with 4-58 and the economical Jamie Wakefield (3-19) were the home side’s top bowlers.

Earlier Timsbury had shown a much improved display in the field with Neil Hucker leading the way with 5-32 from his nine overs. Smith in his first senior game of the season illustrated his value to the side with 2-38 from 13 overs and Ian Ettle put in a good opening spell conceding just 16 runs in his 7 overs. Sodbury openers Craig Scully (49) and Jamie Rendell (36) were the principal contributors for the home side who collapsed from 113-2 to 156-9 from their 45 overs. Scorecard

Timsbury’s second and third strings both fell victim to the weather but the B side travelled to Stotherts third team and were beaten by seven wickets in the Bristol and District League A XI Division 2. On a damp pitch Timsbury struggled against a useful bowling attack with a ball keeping very low at times. The visitors slumped to 53-7 with only Matt Ball (16) making any real impression. Gary Pearcey & Seb Nix then put together a partnership of 42. With good running and punishing the bad ball they showed that it was possible to get runs. Gary dominated with 33 but once the stand was broken, Stotherts wrapped up the innings for 107. Dunne was the pick of the bowlers with 4-24.

In reply, Stotherts found the drying wicket more friendly, Pearcey & Nix bowled well but generally Timsbury bowled too many four balls. The experienced Richards batted through for 40 and with some straight hitting from Newman (31), and despite a couple of run outs by Matt Davis, Stotherts coasted to victory. Timsbury tried seven bowlers but could not get any control to put pressure on the batting side.

Hoping to break their duck for the season Timsbury entertain Nailsea on Saturday with the seconds visiting the opponents’ second team.
